New plant signs were installed this week.  Signs were made by Campbell High School.

This school year, we created our Outdoor Learning Center which consists of our Native Hawaiian garden, aquaponics lab and pipeline worm bin.  We could not have completed these projects without the generous donations and support from numerous individuals and companies.  Take a look at what we were able to accomplish this school year (click on the link)!  We can't wait to see what is in store for next school year!

Seeds of Change Contest

Help us win money for our school garden and aquaponics.  The garden with the most votes will win up to $25,000 or one of 15 - $10,000 grants. Voting ends May 17.  Tell your family and friends. You can vote once a day!

Aquaponics

Our aquaponics is finally here!  Thank you to HEI Charitable Foundation, iSIS Hawai'i, Hapa Farms, and Chevron for helping us to make our aquaponics a reality! 

Yellow Ohi'a

Thank you to Ryan Peralta and Terrence Toguchi, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, for donating a yellow ohi'a plant to our school garden!  Thank you to Stephanie Hurder who spoke with our 4th grade students about Native Hawaiian plants!  Ms. Fong's class had the honors of planting the yellow ohi'a in our school garden! 

Garden Harvest

We harvested our first kalo and 'uala from our school garden.  A fun time was had by all who came to work in the garden!  Mahalo nui to Kumu Pomaikalani who taught us how to harvest the kalo and 'uala!  The garden club members replanted the kalo and 'uala.

Garden Signs Installed

Garden signs were installed on December 10, 2012.  Our garden now has a name sign as well as sectional signs (flowering, lowland, coastal, endangered, medicinal, and agricultural).  We will be adding individual plant signs as well in the future. Stay tuned to see how our Outdoor Learning Center evolves!

Garden Weeding Info

On Friday, October 19th, Ms. Correia's class took their "Garden Fridays" to a whole new level. Instead of going out to the garden to simply maintain it's beautiful appearance, they went to the garden with a much deeper purpose - to collect data! Each Friday the students of F204 go out to the Outdoor Learning Center and pull pesky weeds that are endangering the health of our precious plants. This week, students partnered up and spread out into the different sections of the garden, tools in hand. Each pair kept track of how many weeds they pulled and then measured their longest and shortest weeds. Through this experience, these young scientists hope to discover which sections have the most weeds and how often it is necessary to go out and maintain these critical areas. 

While out in the garden, the fourth graders needed to use their communication skills to work together, they utilized their knowledge of measurement techniques to determine weed length using both metric and customary units, AND they had to make comparative observations to determine which plants were actually weeds, and which of their weeds qualified as the longest and shortest out of each bunch. Their brains were working big time, yet they were having a ton of fun!

Ms. Correia's class will be analyzing their results this week and will post what they've discovered as soon as they are able to. They are definitely looking forward to using this information and growing knowledge base during their next Garden Friday expedition. Check back for more Outdoor Learning Center updates!
